How to make money on sustainability

(Sept. '24) Interesting perspective from IMD business school scholars Knut Haanaes (ex BCG), Bryony Jansen van Tuyll en prof. D. Fieldstad (ex Accenture) on integrating sustainability into business strategies, when it is not just about mitigating negative impacts but presenting opportunities for increasing value.


The idea is that there are four broad and differentiating types of value creation models:

  1. value chains - companies creating value through ‘product economics’ (eg. Patagonia)

  2. value shops - creating value through ‘knowledge economics’ (eg. BCG, McKinsey)

  3. value access - companies creating value through ‘sharing economics’ (eg. Trove)

  4. value networks - creating value through ‘network economics’ (eg. Umicore)
